"We just went through that with Justice Kavanaugh and he was innocent all the way as far as I'm concerned". Mr. Trump had already called out OPEC and the Saudis at least four times on Twitter for letting oil prices get too high at around US$80 a barrel. "Khashoggi", and that "there needs to be a credible investigation to establish the truth about what happened, and, if relevant, to identify those responsible. and ensure that they are held to account". Trump appeared willing to resist the pressure to follow suit, accepting Saudi denials and their pledge to investigate.

One of the suspects identified by Turkey in the disappearance of the Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi was a frequent companion of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - seen disembarking from airplanes with him in Paris and Madrid and photographed standing guard during his visits this year to Houston, Boston and the United Nations.

She said under global law, both a forced disappearance and an extra-judicial killing were "very serious crimes" and immunity should not be used to impede investigations into what happened and who is responsible.

According to Mr Trump, King Salman denied "any knowledge of whatever may have happened "to our Saudi Arabian citizen".

Turkish authorities say the journalist was killed inside the Saudi consulate by a group of hitmen traveling from Riyadh, which has insisted without evidence that Khashoggi disappeared after leaving the consulate.

Pompeo, who had a friendly rapport before the cameras as he started his meetings, said his conversation with the Saudis were "direct and candid".

After a full day of talks, a statement from Pompeo and a tweet by Trump said that the Saudi leadership "strongly denied knowledge of what took place" in the consulate, without outright rejecting that an incident occurred.

Turkish officials say Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, was murdered and dismembered.

No details were immediately released about the talks Wednesday between Pompeo and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

In the meantime, there were signs at home that Trump's party was growing uncomfortable with his willingness to defend the Saudis.

Mr Pompeo meets with the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

"This guy has got to go", he concluded, saying bin Salman, the son of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has "tainted" the country's image. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, speaking on Fox television.

The newspaper said one of the Saudis torturing Khashoggi replied: "Shut up if you want to live when you return to (Saudi) Arabia".

His disappearance has strained relations with Washington amid strong pressure in Congress and the U.S. media to prevent the issue from being swept under the carpet. He also wrote against Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen and its Iran policy. The Saudi Arabia kingship was said to be very unhappy with his writings and moves to unite intellectuals and activists who supported democracy. But his complaint about "guilty until proven innocent" and comparison to the Kavanaugh situation suggested he was giving the Saudis more leeway than other allies.

Turkish officials say they fear a Saudi hit team killed Khashoggi, who has been missing almost two weeks. She and Turkish authorities say he never emerged and he has not been heard from since. Trump provided no evidence, but that statement appeared to offer the USA -allied kingdom a possible path out of a global diplomatic firestorm. "We don't make deal - any deals for hostages or prisoners", he said. "When I visit a country, I always speak my mind".
