Russian, US astronauts survive rocket failure in space station launch

Astronaut Nick Hague and cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin were rescued without injuries in Kazakhstan.
Russian investigators said they were launching a criminal probe into the accident, the first such incident on a manned flight in the country's post-Soviet history.
The failure is a setback for the Russian space program and the latest in a string of mishaps. Roscosmos also announced it is forming a commission to investigate the cause of the booster failure. The situation looked quite similar to what Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and American astronaut Nick Hague experienced Thursday.
Booster rockets carrying a Soyuz spacecraft with a Russian and a USA astronaut on board headed for the International Space Stationfailed mid-air on Thursday, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing.
3 minutes, 15 seconds after liftoff from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 4:47 a.m. EDT, something went wrong with the Soyuz rocket bringing crew members to the International Space Station.
The problem came as the rocket was traveling about 4,700 miles per hour (7,563 kph), just 119 seconds into the voyage, according to NASA.
The launch failure follows close on the heels of another Soyuz issue, in which a hole was discovered August 29 on the MS-09 spacecraft that delivered the most recent crew to the space station.
One potential problem: the spacecraft that would let the ISS crew to return to Earth, which docked at the station in June, is equipped with batteries that lose power after about 200 days, NASA said.
"That was a short flight". The escape tower then angled the capsule off to the side, ejected, and the capsule opened parachutes for landing. "The teams are en route to the landing site". Last month, the current ISS crew discovered a hole in the vessel that Russian Federation claims was drilled deliberately.
Russia's RIA news agency reported that Russian Federation has immediately suspended all manned space launches after the failure.
This type of Soyuz rocket has been flying people to space since 2001, and until now, it has never failed, according to Space News.
This isn't the first time this has happened. Russia's Investigative Committee said it had opened a criminal investigation into the matter.
"Officials are now examining the launch site, documents are being seized", it said in a statement.
"Thank God, the crew is alive", Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, told reporters when it became clear the crew had landed safely.
The Russian Soyuz rocket was forced to make an emergency landing today after suffering from a malfunction. The first crewed flights would not take place until several months after that, unless the space agency is willing to take additional risks with those missions.
The International Space Station - a rare point of cooperation between Moscow and Washington - has been orbiting the Earth since 1998.
The Russian space program has suffered several failures in recent years.
Both of the astronauts feel "good, as well as possible after experiencing such g-forces". "I strongly believe we're going to get the right answer to what caused the hole on the International Space Station and that together we'll be able to continue our strong collaboration", Bridenstine said, as reported by the Associated Press.
A rescue mission was launched immediately, Nasa and the Russian Roscosmos space agency said.
Nasa has been paying for seats on Soyuz rockets to ferry its astronauts to the International Space Station since the Space Shuttle programme ended in 2011.
Michael, it added, could see some additional strengthening before it made landfall in the Florida Panhandle or Big Bend area. Almost 950,000 homes and businesses were without power in Florida, Alabama, the Carolinas and Georgia on Thursday.
