  • Lindsey Buckingham Opens Up About Fleetwood Mac Firing

After the band refused, Buckingham delayed the solo project to accommodate a 60-date tour with the group.

In an interview earlier this week with Rolling Stone magazine, Buckingham blamed Nicks, his former girlfriend, for the rift, saying he was told by the band's manager that Nicks was angry when Buckingham smirked while she was giving a speech at the January Grammy event.

The decision to fire Buckingham and bring on Crowded House's Neil Finn and Tom Petty's right-hand man Mike Campbell to take his place earlier this year came as a huge surprise to practically everyone who thought that the different members of Fleetwood Mac had put their past differences behind them. As Buckingham tells it, Stevie Nicks was ticked off at Buckingham over his antics at a MusiCares benefit concert in January and she gave the band an ultimatum: Either he goes or she goes. At the time, the band's members cited disagreements with Buckingham asking to postpone the tour as one of the reasons for the split, but Buckingham contends that Fleetwood Mac was his priority all along. "We have all done things that were not constructive". After being unceremoniously let go from the band that he helped propel to some of the biggest heights of commercial success that any group has ever enjoyed in music history, Lindsey Buckingham is fighting back.

Buckingham and his wife, Kristen, go on to explain the hurt they've felt since the firing, including when Fleetwood Mac debuted their new lineup on Ellen last month.

"(I said), 'This feels amusing.

Even though Buckingham still has connections to Fleetwood Mac, such as his niece's husband working as a drum tech with the band, and he has attempted to contact Mac co-founder and drummer Mick Fleetwood, Buckingham and his former bandmates have not talked since the MusiCares event. No, because I can see that there are many other areas to look into.

Meanwhile, the fired guitarist insists he's far from heartbroken to no longer be a member of the band - he's just upset about the way he was ousted: "The one thing that does bother me and breaks my heart is we spent 43 years always finding a way to rise above our personal differences and our difficulties to pursue and articulate a higher truth", he continues. That is what the songs are about. I've done my best to reach out to them...
