  • There are still three named storms on the map Wednesday morning

Residents in Panama City, Florida are boarding up coastal properties as Hurricane Michael approaches with increased intensity. It was the strongest storm to hit the continental USA since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

Hurricane Michael has crashed into the Florida Panhandle with winds up to 250 kilometres per hour and the potential for a devastating storm surge from what was expected to be the worst storm ever recorded in the region.

"The historical record, going back to 1851, finds no category four hurricane ever hitting the Florida panhandle".

"You just don't know when the next one is going down". A man in Greensboro, Florida, was killed when a tree fell on his house, a spokesperson for the Gadsden County sheriff said.

Hundreds of thousands of electricity customers were without power as of 6 p.m. ET Wednesday evening.

Human-caused greenhouse gases in the atmosphere create an energy imbalance, with more than 90% of remaining heat trapped by the gases going into the oceans, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association. "Other storms like Hurricane Opal in 1995 actually went from a Category 4 to 3, just like most storms that make landfall on the Gulf Coast tend to weaken".

"Customers in the high impact areas could be without power for weeks".

The governors of North and SC urged residents to brace for more heavy rain and storm-force winds as Michael plows northward up the Atlantic seaboard.

Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia issued an emergency declaration for 92 counties in the southern part of that state. It moved so fast that people didn't have much time to prepare, and emergency authorities lamented that many ignored the warnings and seemed to think they could ride it out.

Trump was briefed on the hurricane on Wednesday prior to it making landfall and said he would visit the area early next week.

The National Hurricane Center forecasted that a few areas could see up to a foot of rain.

The storm had picked up steam as it sped across the Gulf of Mexico toward the Florida Panhandle.

Michael hit Florida with wind speeds of 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour), placing it nearly into Category 5 scale, which starts at 157 mph.

Hurricane Michael is predicted to travel northeast across the southern US, reaching the Atlantic Ocean again on tomorrow night (Oct. 11).

Michael's strong, well-developed core makes for a very powerful, windy storm on land.

That means Michael's pressure at landfall was lower than Maria, Katrina and Andrew. Their ears even popped as the barometric pressure dropped. It was heading north-northeast at 14 miles per hour (22 kph) with maximum sustained winds down to 150 miles per hour, the hurricane center said.
