Google's Leaked Reasons for Not Announcing Mass User Data Breach

  • Google exposed personal data of almost 500,000 and didn't disclose it

The reason, as reported by WSJ, is that it wasn't reported "because of fears that doing so would draw regulatory scrutiny and cause reputational damage".

The company said that was because it could not accurately identify which users to inform, whether there was any misuse or whether there were any actions a developer or user could take in response. This leaked data included full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation and relationship status. The lawsuit was blocked in the High Court on Monday.

The move came amid news that the firm may have failed to disclose a data-exposing security bug presumed to have reached hundreds of thousands of accounts.

Google was afraid it, too, would become the center of attention following Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal, and as such chose not to disclose the information to its users.

Android data access is being restricted to app developers.

Google will retire its Google+ social network after it admitted to finding flaws that may have exposed private data from up to half a million accounts. Google said up to 438 external applications, such as online games or quizzes, could have exploited the flaw.

Monday's report comes in the wake of Google CEO Sundar Pichai upcoming testimony before Congress over concerns the search engine is bias against conservatives. No developer exploited the vulnerability or misused data, the company's review found.

The closure isn't because people are happier using Facebook and Twitter instead of Google's service.

This review crystallized what we've known for a while: that while our engineering teams have put a lot of effort and dedication into building Google+ over the years, it has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption.
It also said that it would strengthen Android app permission requirements to give users more fine-grained control over their mobile phone data, and that it would make it harder for apps to access sensitive information, like SMS messages and call records.

In an unexpected blog posted today, Google revealed it was closing the rather unpopular social network Google+.

For Gmail apps requesting permission to user data Google will only grant access to apps which 'directly enhancing email functionality-such as email clients, email backup services and productivity services (e.g., CRM and mail merge services)'.
