Google drops out of Pentagon's $10 billion cloud competition

  • Google is behind other technology companies such as Amazon and Microsoft in obtaining government cloud-security authorizations that depend on the sensitivity of data a service is hosting. Mint

Google had been angling for the deal, hoping that the $10 billion annual contract could provide a giant boost to its nascent cloud business and catch up with Amazon and fellow JEDI competitor Microsoft. Bids are due in under a week on October 12th.

"We are not bidding on the JEDI contract because first, we couldn't be assured that it would align with our AI Principles", a Google spokesman said in a statement. The company then released a set of principles created to evaluate what kind of artificial intelligence projects it would pursue. Had the JEDI contract been open to multiple vendors, we would have submitted a compelling solution for portions of it. Google Cloud believes that a multi-cloud approach is in the best interest of government agencies, because it allows them to choose the right cloud for the right workload.

The decision to drop out of the bidding comes after thousands of Google employees protested the company's involvement in another U.S. government project.

Shortly after the protest over Maven, Google said it would not renew the contract or pursue similar military contracts.

The Defence Department's cloud needs are directly related to its ambitions for highly networked warfare across air, sea, land, space and cyberspace.

In March, Defence One reported, Air Force Chief of Staff David Goldfein said, "When we look at the future, and discuss not only how to do we connect systems, connect computers at the tactical edge-most of things we are talking about are standalone computers-we have a real opportunity to ask, 'How do we connect these?'.How could we speed decision-making to the point where we have humans doing only what humans need to do?"

The principles bar use of Google's artificial intelligence (AI) software in weapons as well as services that violate global norms for surveillance and human rights.

The front-runner for the contract is widely believed to be Amazon, which already has a $US600 million contract with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Google isn't the only major tech company working with parts of the USA military.
