Facebook cut the number of affected users from its original estimate after investigators reviewed activity on accounts that may have been affected.

Social media giant Facebook, which has its largest user base in India, said that a recent hacking into its system has affected about 30 million users. That said, the hack, "appears to be the worst hack in Facebook's 14-year history", according to Business Insider's Rob Price. Of the 50 million people whose access tokens we believed were affected, about 30 million actually had their tokens stolen.

In a recent conference call regarding the investigation, Facebook vice president of product management, Guy Rosen said, "We now know that fewer people were impacted than we originally thought".

The hackers - whose identities are still a mystery - accessed the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of 15 million users, he said.

Responding to a question, he said, the company will be notifying people through Facebook so that they can understand what information was accessed from their account and which group they were part of. But three errors in Facebook's software enabled someone accessing "view as" to post and browse from the Facebook account of the other user.

Members of congress and investors have grown more concerned Facebook is not doing enough to safeguard data.

The "view as" feature allows users to check their privacy settings by giving them a glimpse of what their profile looks like to others. Rosen said he can't rule out that the different campaigns exploited the same vulnerability during that time.

This messaging breach could have impacted 400,000 users, including political groups. A spokesperson for the Irish data regulator said of Friday's announcement, "The update from Facebook today is significant now that Facebook has confirmed that the personal data of millions of users was taken by the perpetrators of the attack". "Your privacy is incredibly important to us", reads a statement from Facebook, before telling users if they had been targeted. Message content was not available to the attackers, with one exception. They ensured that the criminals could gain access to stored passwords.

The attack prompted Facebook to take the unprecedented step of logging out the 50 million users whose accounts were exposed and logged out another 40 million users as a precautionary measure.

Following that, the hackers used a portion of these 400,000 people's lists of friends to steal access tokens for about 30 million people.

The cyberattack did not affect Messenger, Messenger Kids, WhatsApp, Instagram, Workplace, Oculus, Pages, third-party apps, payments or developer accounts or advertising said the company.
