Australia to Stick with Coal Despite Dire UN Climate Warning

The letter said the report highlighted that there is science, technology and money available to make a difference but political will is lacking.

By contrast, the US, China, Japan, and India are the world's biggest emitters.

Despite Australia's coal habit, the country is also home to the world's largest grid-connected battery, a Tesla system connected to a wind farm in South Australia. While the United Nations panel says technically that's possible, it saw little chance of the needed adjustments happening.

Our analysis of the effect in Botswana and Namibia of 1.5°C, 2.0°C and higher levels of global warming shows that they're likely to get hotter, drier and more water-stressed. It's called the 2-degree goal.

The release this week of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) special report on global warming of 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels marks a critical point in climate negotiations. "Business as usual under Liberal and Labor is a death sentence". Billed in the media as "life changing", the report illustrates how crossing the ever-nearer threshold of 1.5℃ warming will affect the planet, and how hard it will be to avoid overshooting this target. More than 90 scientists wrote the report, which is based on more than 6,000 peer reviews. If there was a global increase in temperature of just 2 degrees Celsius, it would spell widespread disaster and the world may only have 12 years left.

Apollos Nwafor, pan Africa director of Oxfam International, said, "Climate change has set our planet on fire, millions are already feeling the impacts, and the IPCC just showed that things can get much worse". And as Myles Allen, one of the report's authors from Oxford University states, "I think we need to start a debate about who is going to pay for it, and whether it's right for the fossil-fuel industry and its customers to be enjoying the benefits today and expecting the next generation to pay for cleaning it up". He likened the report to an academic exercise wondering what would happen if a frog had wings.

But the IPCC and other global organizations expect we'll need to resort to geoengineering to some degree.

So with all that in mind, is it possible for the world to quit coal in time? "This is our chance to decide what the world is going to look like".

Prior to Trump's comments on Tuesday, the White House's official response to the UN report was to compare the level of the United States' carbon dioxide-related emissions to the rest of the world. For us, this means reducing meat consumption and dairy intake, choosing public transportation or switching to electric and hybrid vehicles and demanding companies to supply low-carbon products for purchase.

China, of course, leads the APAC greenhouse-gas emissions table, stoked by a construction spree that brought nearly 700GW of coal-fired plant on line during a breakneck run in 2016-2017. It has said it has no intention of scaling back fossil fuel production because without coal, household power bills would soar. These include the new European Union 2030 renewable energy target of 32%, the new energy efficiency target of 32.5%, the reform of the European Union emission trading system, the emission reduction targets in sectors falling outside the scope of ETS and the integration of land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) in the EU's climate and energy framework, the Council said.

The scientists said government commitments to curb climate change under the Paris Climate Agreement, even if fully met, would still leave the world on track for about 3 degrees of warming.

Meeting the tougher-to-reach goal "could result in around 420 million fewer people being frequently exposed to extreme heat waves, and about 65 million fewer people being exposed to exceptional heat waves", the report said.
