Since the launch of ELS around the world, the most observed impact of the feature has been in critical, emergency situations by shortening emergency response times.
In an announcement today, Google revealed that it has teamed with T-Mobile and RapidSOS to bring ELS to the United States.
Google's ELS pinpoints the location of a T-Mobile customer's handset through a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks and sensors, in much the same way Google Maps provides location data, Google said.
The emergency service technology is due to partnerships with RapidSOS, T-Mobile, and West. Hard enough that it took Google until just now to expand its faster, more accurate Emergency Location Service (ELS) to the US.
RapidSOS, which was founded in 2012 and backed by three former Federal Communications Commission leaders, said its technology will now send faster, more accurate 911 caller location information to call centers nationwide. You don't need a separate app, update, or any special hardware to benefit. The service aims to enhance network operators, emergency infrastructure providers and governments provide accurate location information to the first responder during an emergency, Google stated.
For those anxious about privacy, Google says ELS data is only seen by emergency service providers and a caller's location is not seen by any Google employee.
Google is finally expanding the life-saving Android Emergency Location Service it first debuted in 2016 to the US. You'll need an Android phone running 4.0 or later in order for ELS to work, but assuming you do, there's nothing you have to worry about. The Mountain View search giant reports that its data decreases the average uncertainty radius from 522 feet to 121 feet. The system is now available in 14 countries around the world, providing emergency centers with location data on more than 140,000 emergency calls per day. With this, emergency call centers get fairly accurate location data based on things like Global Positioning System and WiFi.
In the USA, emergency tech firm RapidSOS provides ELS locations directly to emergency communications centers through its secure platform, which is integrated directly into existing software at emergency centers in the US.
