Giant spiders' web covers Greek beach

It sounds like a something out of a horror movie: A town covered in thousands of webs, each crawling with hordes of spiders.

The white blanket sprung up in Aitoliko, a city in western Greece.

Maria Chatzaki, professor of molecular biology and genetics at Democritus University of Thrace, told Newsit Greece's high temperatures are creating the ideal climate for reproduction.

The cloudy web stretches over an abandoned boat, trees and rows of vegetation in photographs published to Facebook by user Giannis Giannakopoulos.

The giant webs are spun by a very small spider of the Tetragnatha genus ― it's just 0.7 inches long, according to Inside Edition.

Though those with phobias may find the sudden presence frightening, experts say these spiders aren't risky to humans and were likely just taking advantage of favorable mating conditions. "They mate, they reproduce and provide a whole new generation".

Sadly, the eight-legged architects will soon die off, leaving the web to degrade naturally. "This phenomenon has arisen from a population explosion of this spider".

Biologist Fotis Pergantis, president of the region's Messolonghi National Lagoon Park, says the warm weather has led to an increase in the presence of gnats, on which the spiders feed.

Fortunately, the spiders shouldn't cause any permanent damage to the area's plants.

An increase in the number of mosquitoes in the area is thought to have given rise to high numbers of the arachnids, also known as stretch spiders due to their elongated bodies.

But the spiders' romps will be short-lived, according to British media reports which quoted an interview done by Greek website
