Andres sought to rehabilitate Gates with a series of rapid-fire questions about financial machinations underpinning the tax- and bank-fraud case against Manafort.

One of Manafort's defense lawyers, Jay Nanavati, said Gates was to blamefor any errors in the loan application.

Gates also said that he did not report 15 foreign offshore bank accounts to the government. He is the first person to be tried on charges brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

The terms of Manafort's loan also allowed him to withdraw cash from the bank, and Miceli testified that was not allowed for loans against investment properties.

The vendors testified about how Manafort paid for his luxury goods, including cars and custom suits, by using direct wire transfers from accounts overseas.

Prosecutors called their second government witness of the trial to the stand Wednesday to outline the investigative methods that led to the tax evasion charges against Manafort.

The additional purchases cited during Welch's testimony included $132,000 for the business International Yacht Collection, $45,000 for a cosmetic dentist north of Palm Beach. Their legal strategy so far has hinged on attacking the credibility of the prosecution's star witness, former Manafort business partner Rick Gates.

Downing's questions to Gates about affairs and embezzlement cut to the heart of the defense's case trying to undermine Gates' credibility with jury and pin the blame on Gates for Manafort's alleged crimes.

Attorney Kevin Downing suggested the revelation would destroy Rick Gates's plea agreement with the special counsel's office but was blocked by an instant government objection. Gates, a married father of four, had testified he used his firm's money to carry on the affair.

Judge T.S. Ellis said he was "probably wrong" for criticizing prosecutors over one of their witnesses, IRS revenue agent Michael Welch, being in the courtroom observing the trial leading up to his testimony, according to CNN.

Rick Gates has been the government's star witness in Manafort's financial fraud trial, testifying how, at the behest of his longtime boss, he helped hide millions of dollars in foreign income and submitted fake mortgage and tax documents.

She said even though she worked with Gates a lot, it was clear to her that Manafort "knew what was going on" in most instances.

"I'm here to tell the truth", Gates replied.

Gates, a 46-year-old father of four, first met Manafort back when he was an intern in D.C.in the late 1990s, and later became Manafort's right-hand man as Manafort made millions from Ukrainian oligarchs boosting the country's pro-Russia party.

Mr Downing forced Gates to admit he had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort by filing bogus personal expenses claims and that he had engaged in an extramarital affair and kept an apartment in London for that goal. Andres prompted Gates to point out where the money came from that he had stolen.

Prosecutors relied on Gates to provide first-hand support of the accusations against Manafort.

Manafort attorney Richard Westling also attempted to sow doubt in Magionos's testimony regarding the authenticity of the Manafort signature on various documents that were presented.

Manafort, a longtime Republican political consultant, used the accounts to receive payments from Ukrainian oligarchs, the jury has heard.

Funds "should be in your account today. In reality, it was basically money moving between accounts". "I have taken responsibility".

Ellis has repeatedly tussled with prosecutors, interrupting them and pressuring them to hurry through their case. The prosecutors on Wednesday said Ellis had approved having them sit in, but the judge screamed at the lawyers in front of the jury, '"Don't ever do that again".
