Tiger wakes up the echoes with best major final round

And yet Thomas and the rest of his Tour colleagues are very aware of just how special Koepka is, and how insane it is that someone with four PGA Tour wins has claimed three of the last six major titles.
Of course, there is also Tiger Woods, who not only just finished runner-up at the PGA Championship but has vocalized, over and over, the desire to participate in the 2018 Ryder Cup as a player.
He is the first man to pull off the U.S. Open-PGA Championship double since Woods in 2000.
"And especially with Tiger making that run, and then Scotty birdied 12 and 13, and it became a really tight race".
Tiger Woods plays a shot during his final round 6-under 64 at Bellerive Country Club in St Louis, Missouri.
"I do want to be on the team as a player", Woods said. I think I'm much more disciplined now so I should be able to play every major, making sure my body's healthy. And then his round was derailed - but only temporarily - when he came up a foot short of the green on the par-3 sixth hole, went into the water and made triple bogey.
Koepka was responsible for that.
While everyone was focused on Woods and Koepka, Scott stayed in contention, canning midlength putts on the 12th and 13th holes to climb into a tie for the lead at 14 under. His 264 total is a new 72-hole scoring record at the PGA Championship.
Other contending major winners include 2009 British Open winner Stewart Cink, 2015 PGA Championship winner Jason Day of Australia, second-ranked defending champion Justin Thomas and 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel of South Africa.
Koepka has won three of the last six majors he played, and two of three this year alone.
Woods did not directly answer a question as to whether he had any expectations at the start of the year of contending in back-to-back majors.
Koepka can tap home and win the title, with Scott yet to even hit the green.
As Thomas faded, Scott and Woods charged at him, but Koepka remained steady. How many men get to say that they held off a greathearted, day-long charge by Woods, the victor of 14 major championships, who posted no fewer than eight birdies across the par-70 course, including two in his last four holes, for his lowest score ever in a major?
On the European side, qualifying runs for another three weeks before captain Thomas Bjorn makes his four picks in September.
British Open victor Francesco Molinari of Italy and England's Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood helped secure their lead in the European points spots with solid showings at the PGA, Molinari sharing sixth and Hatton sharing 10th.
"There's a big chance tomorrow, but there are probably 10 guys thinking the same thing", he said. "You try to make the best of a bad situation and just keep rolling with it".
Koepka leads by two shots with one hole left to play.
That was as good as it got. He missed 15-foot birdie putts on 15 and 16 and reached 17, a par 5, in two, but three-putted from 42 feet, leaving the first putt 11 feet short. He did well to advance it, but had to save par from a bunker.
Woods said it has been a long time since he felt so good about a loss, finishing two strokes behind Brooks Koepka but serving notice he truly can contend for more major titles.
Koepka never imagined a year like this.
Koepka joked about working out in a public gym this week with Dustin Johnson and not being recognized. He has been motivated by more serious moments, from being left off the "notable scores" section of TV coverage at tournaments and even last week, when he was not summoned for a TV interview to preview the PGA Championship.
The overnight leader gave the field a chance following two early bogeys but the 2018 US Open champion powered back to take the lead and then move clear throughout the final holes.
