Several manufacturers in Japan have been found to have improperly tested cars for emissions and fuel economy in an investigation ordered by the Japanese government after the discovery of Nissan and Subaru's emissions testing impropriety previous year.

The results came to light after the Japanese government had ordered the automakers to check their operations after revelations of improper testing at Subaru and Nissan previous year.

The report is the latest episode in a growing list of data falsifications in Japan that has tarnished the image of the country's manufacturing industry, known for high-quality, efficient production.

The automakers examined tests they had conducted over different periods of time, and in Suzuki's case they stretched back to 2012.

The conduct of automakers globally has come under intense scrutiny after Germany's Volkswagen AG admitted in 2015 to installing secret software in hundreds of thousands of US diesel cars to cheat exhaust emissions tests, and that as many as 11 million vehicles could have similar software installed worldwide.

"Mishandlings found in so many vehicles were a serious problem, and we take it very seriously", Suzuki Motor president Toshihiro Suzuki told a news conference, and apologized to the company's customers and business partners for causing trouble. Suzuki found that it had conducted improper tests on a sample of 6,401 units out of a possible 12,819 since 2012.

Mazda said it 72 vehicles or 3.8 percent of those in its sample were affected, while Yamaha put the figure at 2.1 percent of its motorbike sample. He said managers familiar with inspections were not staffed at the factories where discipline was lacking. The ministry said it will instruct them to save records of the inspections and implement measures to detect or prevent data falsification. Yamaha Motor confirmed it carried out inappropriate testing.

The ministry made the results public based on reports from 20 automakers collected as of Wednesday.

Results at Japanese affiliates of three foreign automakers - Audi AG, Volkswagen AG and Volvo Cars - were pending, while no irregularities were reported by the remaining 17 companies, the ministry said.
