  • A nightclub bouncer told the court Stokes ridiculed his appearance

The jury on Wednesday in the Ben Stokes affray trial at Bristol Crown Court was shown security camera footage of the brawl outside Bristol nightclub Mbargo between the England cricketer and Ryan Ali, Ryan Hale.

They are jointly charged in connection with an incident in the Clifton Triangle area of Bristol on September 25 a year ago - several hours after England had played a one-day worldwide against the West Indies in the city.

Stokes then tried to shake hands with Cunningham, but this was refused, which Corsellis said "seemed to enrage Mr Stokes".

Ali is alleged to have threatened Stokes' teammate Alex Hales with a bottle during the incident, while Hale broke off a metal pole from a nearby road sign after being allegedly knocked out by Stokes.

Ali also claimed he didn't recall where the bottle came from or holding it but accepted, having watched CCTV footage, that he brandished one in self-defence.

"Ali responds by pushing Barry away, albeit with no significant force", he told the jury.

He said Ali "seemed to be trying to back away or get away from the situation" before he was punched by Stokes.

Jurors have been told that Stokes first hit Hale, knocking him to the ground, before rendering Ali unconscious in the punch seen by Spure.

Hale is then shown collapsing to the floor outside a shop window but picking himself up after 20 seconds and disappearing from view before returning.

He identified Stokes to attending police officers, who arrested him. He said "matters had become too serious to ignore and that I had to intervene". And Stokes replied: "Because he was abusing my two friends for being gay". "Although I can't remember anything specific now, I do recall that the language being used was homophobic in nature and was being directed at Kai and William by Ryan Hale and Ryan Ali". I took exception and said "leave it out".

"These men were speaking to the gay guys in what I would call a harsh and abusive way", the statement said. I struck Ryan Ali with my right hand just after he had delivered the blow on Kai and as he came at me with the bottle and had it raised.

The doorman said Hales asked what had happened and, after being told, said to his team-mate: "Stokesy - don't do that".
