Sir Vidia, was born in Chaguanas on August 17, 1932 and moved to England after winning a national scholarship to study at Oxford University.
A statement released by the family today said the novelist died at his London home.
He will probably be best remembered for his fourth (and most autobiographical) novel A House for Mr Biswas, with its Trinidadian setting and its themes, typical of all his work: self-determination, exile, identity and the gradual disintegration of a post-colonial society.
He was knighted in 1990 and won the Nobe Prize in Literature in 2001. He was a scourge of anyone who used a clich頯r an un-thought out sentence.
In awarding him the $1 million Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001, the Swedish Academy praised Naipaul for combining genres into his own style that compels readers "to see the presence of suppressed histories". In his early days as a writer, Diana Athill, publisher at André Deutsch, encouraged Naipaul to write a novel, which resulted in the birth of The Mystic Masseur, a book which was awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1958, and Miguel Street the Somerset Maugham Award in 1961. In 2008, he recalled his childhood as "pretty awful" and his family as "terrible. very large, with too many people". He met his first wife, Pat, at Oxford, who became his constant literary support.
Naipaul was also outspoken throughout his career, likening former British prime minister Tony Blair to a pirate at the head of a socialist revolution.
Mr Naipaul notoriously fell out with author Paul Theroux, whom he had mentored, with the spat causing a rift for years. He "will go down as one of the greatest writers of our time", Theroux said.
Naipaul won the 1971 Booker Prize for his novel In a Free State.
The editor of the Mail on Sunday, Geordie Greig, a close friend of Sir Vidia, said his death leaves a "gaping hole in Britain's literary heritage" but there is "no doubt" that his "books live on". "I found them usually leftwing and trivial and antiquated".
Another Indian-origin English novelist and journalist Hari Kunzru recalled interviewing him and said: "When we sat down, the first thing he said was 'tell me what you've read and don't".
