OpenAI's team of AI-powered Dota 2 bots have reached yet another impressive milestone - it was able to beat the five veteran players in a 3-on-3 match, dominating two rounds before being defeated narrowly in the third match. From a recap of the competition via The Verge, "The OpenAI Five triumphed in convincing fashion in the first game, not allowing the human players to even destroy one of their defensive towers". It then faced a team of some of the world's top players (Blitz, Cap, Fogged, Merlini and Moonmeander) in a best-of-three contest.
This is in stark contrast to the simple bots developed by Valve for training and practice purposes, which are typically no match for human players. Still, the bots demonstrated that they have now learnt how to play the game well enough to defeat a team of five human players ranked in the 99.95th percentile.
In front of 100,000 live-streamers, the bot team easily took out the best-of-three tournament, winning the first game in 21.5 minutes and the second in just under 25 (evenly matched games generally take around 45 minutes).
Next up for OpenAI will be to take on one the best players in the world at The International 8, in September. The characters Open AI played were selected by Twitch users, giving Team Human a slight advantage.
OpenAI's initiatives with Dota 2 began in March previous year. The bot has around 10,000 hours of Dota 2 playtime, which it uses to formulate advanced strategies that pro teams employ, according to the OpenAI organization. This resulted in the bot predicting a lower chance of winning of the match.
OpenAI Five will take on an active professional team during the global main event in August 2018.
After losing to OpenAI Five, Capitalist Walsh expressed his despair in a tweet. The bots then learned to play Dota at the rate of 180 years per day and now they have evolved to a level where they have beaten human professional players easily. Last month, the company released footage of a robotic arm manipulating a cube with uncanny dexterity that was trained using reinforcement learning algorithm as the OpenAI Five.
