The US ambassador to the United Kingdom called yesterday for the government to abandon European allies and side with President Trump over Iranian sanctions. "We are asking global Britain to use its considerable diplomatic power and influence and join us as we lead a concerted global effort toward a genuinely comprehensive agreement", Johnson said.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has cancelled a visit to Iran, his press office said on Sunday, as the premier came under strong Iranian criticism over his stand on renewed USA sanctions against Tehran.

It saw the regime agree to curb its nuclear programme in return for the lifting of sanctions.

In an article for The Sunday Telegraph Mr Johnson told British companies to stop doing business with Iran...

While ratcheting up pressure on Tehran, the sanctions are worsening rifts between the United States and European allies, and other world powers, which say they remain committed to the nuclear deal, and will not comply with the US sanctions.

President Trump withdrew in May from the nuclear accord brokered by former President Obama with the EU, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation.

"Together, we can help bring about the peace and prosperity in Iran that the whole world wants to see".

"We won't let Washington dictate us with whom we can do business and we therefore stick to the Vienna Nuclear Agreement so that Iran cannot build atomic weapons", Altmaier said.

He noted that Iran's economic woes likely have little to do with renewed United States sanctions, noting that they have "only just started".

The U.S. administration blames Iran for fomenting instability in the Middle East and encouraging terrorism.

USA sanctions that had been eased by the Obama administration under the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, took effect again Tuesday. The mechanism stops European companies from complying with the USA sanctions unless they have authorization from the Commission.

'Only by presenting a united front can we exert the maximum possible pressure on the Iranian regime, and get it to finally change course and put an end to its malign and reckless activities both at home and overseas, ' said the ambassador.

The statement comes a day after the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to an Iraqi official who claimed on Saturday that Abadi was to visit both neighboring countries' capitals in the coming week.

She is struggling to quell rebellions within the ranks of her Conservative party over Brexit negotiations and she can't afford to alienate Brussels further by siding with Washington on the Iran nuclear deal, say analysts.
