  • A dead fetus reportedly was found Tuesday morning onboard an out-of-service American Airlines plane in New York City

An American Airlines cleaning crew found "what appears to be a fetus" in the lavatory of a plane early Tuesday morning, spokesman Justin Franco told CNN by phone.

The fetus was found hours after Flight 1942 arrived Monday in New York City night from Charlotte, North Carolina. The aircraft sat in the American Airlines hangar overnight before a cleaning crew arrived early this morning, CBS News reported.

Fetus was thought to be 5 months along. The City Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy on the fetus.

The airport tweeted this Tuesday that the popular airline was experiencing delays, later adding that the plane was back in service.

"We will release determination when the investigation is complete".

American Airlines also sent out an official statement, but offered no details about what had been found.

A spokesperson for the Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, whose jurisdiction includes the airport, declined to comment.

A traveler who was scheduled to fly out of LaGuardia to Charlotte at 7:55 a.m. was frustrated that her flight was delayed three times without explanation.
