Apple tells Congress that the customer is not its product

  • Lawmakers get Apple to reveal how often its store rejects apps

The letter came after Walden and other Republicans on the committee pressed Apple and Google for more information on their data collection practices last month, questioning whether consumers' smartphones collected location or audio data without their knowledge. He doesn't deny, however, that Apple collects extensive consumer data.

"We believe privacy is a fundamental human right and purposely design our products and services to minimize our collection of customer data", Timothy Powderly, Apple's director of federal government affairs, wrote in the company's response.

"We hope that the responses below are helpful in understanding these topics and make clear Apple's position that customers are entitled to transparency, choice, and control over their personal information", the letter concludes, while offering to brief lawmakers about the subject.

"The customer is not our product, and our business model does not depend on collecting vast amounts of personally identifiable information to enrich targeted profiles marketed to advertisers", Powderly writes. Grassley's committee had held hearings in April on "Facebook, Social Media Privacy, and the Use and Abuse of Data". CEO Tim Cook was asked what he would do if he were Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg, and the Apple executive's response has become something of a mantra for Apple. It also asked whether the companies collect location information the background when Bluetooth or other technologies capable of tracking a phone's location were turned off.

In the full-length letter, Apple has explained in detail its location services and has answered all the 16 questions. The company also said it does not share any "Siri utterances" to third parties.

In a letter to federal lawmakers, the tech giant insisted that iPhones do not listen to what users are saying and said third-party app developers don't have access to audio data. Apple requires RapidSOS to delete messages that contain "Enhanced Emergency Data" collected during 911 calls, such as a caller's estimated longitude and latitude, within 12 hours after receiving it. Siri utterances are sent to Apple and handled in accordance with Apple's Privacy Policy.
