Wimbledon: I gave it my all against Federer, says Anderson

Federer, an eight-time Wimbledon champion, had not lost a set here since his five-set defeat to Milos Raonic in a 2016 semifinal. The final scoreline read in 2-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 13-11 in favor of the eighth-seeded Anderson. After that, Federer began to struggle and Anderson unloaded his swings on every shot.

Anderson's huge serve kept Federer on the back foot and the towering eighth seed also fared much better than expected in the baseline rallies.

When Wimbledon got underway July 2, tennis fans of all loyalties seemed united in rooting for one pairing in Sunday's men's final: a reprise of the 2008 clash between Federer and Nadal, which produced what many believe is the greatest match in tennis history.

But after failing to convert a match point in the third set, Federer allowed a rash of errors to creep into his game, particularly on the forehand side.

Federer, the five-time reigning champion, was cruising in the 2009 U.S. Open final (sense the theme), when he was thrown off his game by a combination of the raw, hard-hitting 19-year-old Del Potro and, of all things, computer technology. He won only 3 of 12 break points on Anderson's serve in the match.

"I think Rafa and Del Potro had to be on Centre Court", Murray told BBC.

Anderson said after the match that although he was nearly down and out, he knew that he had to keep trying to get back into the match. He had brushed aside all four challengers en route to Anderson, including winning the first set of his Round 4 match against Adrian Mannarino in just 16 minutes.

The 36-year-old had needed only 26 minutes to take the first set, leaving him horrified as a fifth successive Wimbledon semi-final slipped through his fingers from such a commanding position.

Anderson then served it out, ending things with a 205kph service victor, and raised both arms overhead.

"He's not going to stay around forever but there's no reason for him not to come back one more year at least".

Unsurprisingly, Anderson says his win over Federer will be one he cherishes for a long time.

The victor of this one will face either John Isner or Milos Raonic in the semifinals on Friday. I felt like I did some good business here in the past already.

Eventually though, Djokovic pulled away with emphatic wins in both the third and fourth sets. While Federer was waiting to play his semifinal against No. 14 seed Marin Cilic, Djokovic was getting upset by Kei Nishikori, seemingly handing Federer the trophy on a silver platter.

Until this last-eight match, Federer had never lost a match in Wimbledon after holding the match point. "It's not the first time for me in the semifinals, but it is a win that I want to enjoy before I focus on the semis", he said.

There's nothing really that shocked me because I've seen Kevin play many, many times in the past. I couldn't really get the rallies going the way I wanted to, especially 1-2 punch wasn't working at all.
