  • Dwayne Johnson explains why he stopped going by 'The Rock,' then brought the nickname back

Johnson explained why he nixed and subsequently returned to "The Rock" as a nickname in a new interview for Jamie Foxx's Grey Goose-sponsored digital series, "Off Script".

The Rock has beaten some of the biggest legends in WWE history like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, The Undertaker and many more throughout his career and knows when he sees talent.

"I was told at [one] time, 'Listen, you can't talk about wrestling".

"Realistically, as we go into 2018, when you look at my slate as we're developing and shooting into 2019 and 2020, the slate goes deep into 2021, so it feels like the realistic consideration would be 2024", he told Variety in December.

As Entertainment Weekly notes, Johnson dropped "The Rock" from his persona before the release of his 2005 movie "Southland Tales". "You can't be as big".

The "Die Hard" comparisons are inevitable with "Skyscraper", the latest action vehicle for the very busy Dwayne Johnson.

"I was exhausted of trying to be something I wasn't", he admitted.

And Johnson is more than happy to support those ambitions. So finally I reached a point where I said, 'All right, two things have to happen: "I'm gonna surround myself with a different group of people, different management, and then I'm gonna make sure that I just gotta be me'".

Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Noah Taylor, Roland Møller, Byron Mann, Pablo Schreiber, and Hannah Quinlivan co-star.

Fans can catch Johnson saving the day in Skyscraper, in theaters Friday nationwide.
