Rafael Nadal narrowly avoided a nasty collision with a spectator as he was forced to hop into the crowd during his Wimbledon quarter-final match with Juan Martin del Potro.

Del Potro finished with 77 winners to Nadal's 67 but could not convert any of his five break points in the fifth set.

It was not as if Nadal was playing badly as he had lost only nine points on serve before heading into the ninth game of the second set.

The French Open champion will next face Novak Djokovic in a clash of two former champions following the Serbian's success over Kei Nishikori earlier on Wednesday.

The bar was set absurdly high by the time Rafael Nadal walked onto Centre Court on Monday but the Spaniard responded with a sensational 6-3 6-3 6-4 defeat of Jiri Vesely to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

In the next set, Del Potro broke and served for the set at 5-4, but double-faulted and Nadal clinched the break-back with a forehand victor down the line for the second set to be decided by a tiebreaker.

Del Potro trails world number one Nadal 10-5 in career meetings. Visily broke Nadal midway through to provoke familiar concerns that a turnaround could strike but Nadal broke back immediately and sealed victory with his third match point to triumph 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

But there were flourishes to Nadal's play too, notably another hotdog shot and also a wicked forehand victor that cut across the court and dipped dramatically onto the line.

Del Potro put both hands on his head.

"It was a very emotional match. great quality tennis, especially in the last set there were some awesome points". Eventually, things went to a tiebreak Del Potro won to capture the set.

The deciding fifth set was a tight battle, but in the fifth game, Nadal got the solitary break to lead 3-2.

"Rafa is a fighter". The hard-serving American beat Milos Raonic of Canada 6-7 (5), 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-3 to set up a meeting with Kevin Anderson of South Africa in Wimbledon's last four.
