UK's May names new foreign secretary

  • EPAAndrea Leadsom reportedly said she “hated” the plan but would support Mrs May

Speaking alongside the German chancellor at a news conference in London, May rejected the charge that she had caved in to pressure from Brussels to keep strong ties with the bloc. She also told her party that "to lead is to decide". "The direct consequences of that will be Prime Minister Corbyn".

Boris Johnson has done the right thing... finally.

May's premiership has been left hanging by a thread following the dual resignations of Brexit minister David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson from her Cabinet.

In response, May said she was looking forward to meeting Trump when he arrives Thursday: "We'll be talking positively about how we can continue to work together in our special relationship".

As the flamboyant public face of the Vote Leave campaign, Johnson's departure deepened the sense of crisis in Downing Street, and increased the chances that May could face a vote of no confidence in the coming days. No one knows why this should have suddenly offended the principles of a man who once wrote that the "problem" with Africa was "not that we were once in charge, but that we are not in charge any more".

Downing Street swiftly appointed eurosceptic housing minister Dominic Raab to Davis's job, and said May was looking forward to working with him to deliver Britain's departure from the European Union in March.

Yet another housing minister has been appointed after Dominic Raab was made Brexit Secretary this morning following David Davis's resignation. Davis told May in a letter that the government's proposals for close trade and customs ties "will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one".

Amendments striking at the heart of the Chequers scheme are being supported by leading Brexiteers including Jacob Rees-Mogg, Bernard Jenkin and Owen Paterson.

May replaced Johnson with a loyalist, former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, and gave Davis' job to Dominic Raab in a bid to shore up her authority. Three junior ministers also quit their posts. The British leader may have quelled talk of a leadership challenge, but some Conservative Brexit supporters are still incensed over what they see as her breach of a promise of a clean break with the EU.

This has focused on whether the United Kingdom should prioritise business interests and keep a close relationship with the European Union in order to minimise friction for cross-border trade - which critics say will mean the United Kingdom still abiding by European Union rules and leaving "in name only".

"Michel Barnier and his taskforce can not negotiate an outcome that compromises the integrity of the single market for everybody else".

Tories unhappy with the current Brexit plans need to accept the "harsh truth" that there's no other option, William Hague has said. Analysts said the main reason why the Brexit debate has gone round in circles-and why the U.K.'s negotiations with the European Union have been nearly completely stalled for months-is that much of the British political class have never fully understood what the European Union is or how it works.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph amid speculation over a potential leadership challenge against the PM by Eurosceptic MPs, Lord Hague said: 'Being a Romantic on this issue is all very well but is of no practical use to the country.
