Trump sets expectations low for Helsinki summit with Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he may ask his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during their upcoming meeting to extradite to the U.S. the 12 Russian intelligence officers accused of attempting to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. "Now, you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe", the POTUS tells CBS News. "I don't think you'll have any 'Gee, I did it".
A report on Russian state television said that, at their last encounter in Vietnam in November, the USA president had initially wanted to hold an in-depth discussion with Putin but was "scared out of it" by his own advisers; now in Finland Trump is due to get a closed-door meeting without aides.
"Russia is a foe in certain respects". It doesn't mean anything. "It means that they are competitive", Trump said. He claimed the Russians also attempted to hack into the Republican National Committee, "but we had much better defenses".
"I do believe in meetings", Trump insisted in an interview with CBS News that aired before he touched down in Helsinki.
"The EU is very hard".

Trump has been reluctant to criticize Putin over the years and has described him in recent days not as an enemy but as a competitor.
What about the Putin summit and alleged hacking?
From aboard Air Force One, Trump called the US news media "the enemy of the people" and complained that he'll face criticism regardless of the summit outcome.
Coming directly from Scotland after his visit to Britain, Trump will hold talks with Putin on Monday with only translators.
Trump has being criticized by lawmakers from both sides of the aisle for his reluctance to condemn Putin and Russian Federation for the meddling.
Asked whether he would press Putin to send to the U.S. members of the Russian military intelligence agency accused of hacking Hillary Clinton's failed presidential campaign, he said it had not occurred to him.
Indeed, after a week in which Trump threatened to up-end a summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, anxious European leaders may be relieved if not much comes of the Helsinki meeting. Is it actually a summit, or more of a meeting?
"I respect the leaders of those countries", Trump said of the European Union.
Trump heads into the summit with little clear agenda other than to strengthen his personal rapport with Putin, which he thinks is crucial to improving relations between Washington and Moscow.
Congressional Democrats and at least one Republican have called on Trump to pull out of Monday's meeting unless he is willing to make Russian election-meddling the top issue.
