Team Sky, who were greeted with boos as they negotiated the course, finished in the runner's-up spot, 4 seconds behind, with Geraint Thomas moving into third place overall before van Avermaet and the Belgian's team mate, Tejay van Garderen.

World champion Peter Sagan said he had three reasons to be cheerful as he won stage two and took the overall leader's yellow jersey in front of family and friends from Slovakia on the Tour de France on Sunday.

Quick-Step Floors nicked third place in a time of 38:53, while Adam Yates' Mitchelton-Scott team were a further two seconds behind before some much larger time gaps further down the order.

BMC were among the pre-stage favourites and demonstrated why, celebrating another victory three years after they won the last team time trial stage on the Tour. Rigoberto Uran's EF Education First-Drapac team gave up 35 seconds in fifth, Mikel Landa and Nairo Quintana's Movistar 54 seconds in 10th, and Vincenzo Nibali's Bahrain-Merida team 66 seconds in 11th.

"It's a dream. We rode a good time trial and the whole team worked hard", said Van Avermaet.

Froome and his Sky team-mates were also left behind but they did at least stay upright, 24 hours after Froome lost 51 seconds to most of his general classification rivals thanks to a tumble in the final six kilometres. "I love France and the Tour, which is the most attractive race on the planet".

"It puts us right back in the game".

The latter's hopes of reclaiming the maillot jaune took an early hit, however, as he lost contact with the back of the Quick-Step train and the team split apart early in the stage.

Porte's BMC team had been expected to make up for their disappointing first day when their Australian leader fell. "I think I am in good condition and I have a good team around me but there are no doubts that this is the most important test of the season for me".

Chris Froome's bid for a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title got off to a shaky start Saturday after a dramatic crash left him trailing first stage victor Fernando Gaviria by over one minute.

Sir Bradley Wiggins believes anti-Team Sky sentiment within cycling led to details of Chris Froome's Salbutamol case being leaked in December.

"To be honest I didn't even think about it (the yellow jersey), it was just about winning the stage".

"There was way too much wind for me", said the slightly-built Porte. "I'm just grateful I'm not injured in any way and there is still a lot of road to follow before we get to Paris".

Froome put in an imperial performance on Monday showing the kind of power in the saddle that has led him to four previous Tour de France victories where he dominates the time trials and defends his lead in the mountains. We just wanted to get that stage.

For Porte, the stage win took on special significance as it marked a year since he crashed out of last year's Tour on the decent into Chambery on the ninth stage.

"We're happy, we had the yellow and that's part of history".
