  • Thai Cave Rescue Mission Stretches Into 2nd Day As More Boys Freed

The first boy rescued by Monday's team was freed around 4:30 p.m. local time and transferred to the same hospital as the first four boys who were rescued on Sunday.

The next day (7th July), it was decided by the rescue operation chief Narongsak Osottanakorn that it was not yet safe for the boys to dive out of the cave.

"All five will be brought out at the same time today", he said, to cheers from reporters and rescue workers.

On Sunday, officials said it could "take days" to rescue the remaining boys and their coach. It is not immediately clear how the rains had affected levels inside the cave.

"One of the things we have learned from previous research is that how young people are before they undergo an extreme experience like this is often a reasonably good predictor of how they will do later on after the event".

He added that the divers were the "same multinational team" that rescued the four boys on Sunday.

Officials are constantly pumping water out of the caves, and Sunday gave the rescue crews the best chance of recovering more survivors after days of decent weather and pumping reduced flood levels.

Meanwhile, a letter of apology from the coach of the football team was delivered to the boys' parents via the cave divers.

Ambulances and a helicopter were seen rushing from the cave site on Monday.

Officials lavished praise on the Thai and global divers who executed the risky rescue mission, guiding boys who can barely swim and have no diving experience through a treacherous 4-kilometre-long (2 1/2-mile) escape route that twisted and turned and rose and fell inside the mountain cave complex.

The British Cave Rescue Council (BCRC) confirmed that seven divers from the United Kingdom with "expertise in cave diving" are assisting.

Authorities have been rushing to extract the boys, ages 11-16, and their coach from the cave as the annual monsoon bears down on the mountainous region in far northern Chiang Rai province.

The boys, whose names have not been revealed, are being treated at Chiang Rai Prachanukraw Hospital in Muang district.

The first four boys to leave the cave, ...

The safety of the divers, who have meticulously planned the mission, is also paramount.

The following day (24th June), local authorities found hand and foot prints belonging to the team, while relatives started a vigil outside the cave in hopes that they would be found soon.

Narongsak said rescuers would meet Monday evening to plan for the next operation. The diver, the first fatality of the rescue effort, was working in a volunteer capacity and died on a mission to place air canisters along the passage to where the boys are, necessary for divers to safely travel the five- to six-hour route.
