  • More than one alleged poacher thought to be killed by lions

According to the reserve's owner, at least three people were mauled to death in an area of Sibuya Game Reserve in South Africa's Eastern Province, an area synonymous with poaching.

It is believed the poachers met their untimely demise after the lions prevented them from entering the reserve to hunt down the nearby rhinos.

Poaching, Fox said, is "becoming more and more common in the area" because rhino horns are coveted and believed to be "more valuable than gold".

A group of alleged animal poachers has reportedly met their end after running into a pack of lions while trespassing in a game reserve in South Africa.

One day later, one of the reserve's rangers then stumbled upon the remains of the poachers.

The alleged poachers allegedly brought a high-powered rifle with a silencer, wire cutters, an axe for cutting out the rhino horns, and food to last for several days.

Then, on Tuesday afternoon, one of the field guides found what appeared to be human remains near the lions' range.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender told The Herald Live that police are examining the rifles found at the scene to see if they have been used in other poaching crimes.

When none were found and the area was declared safe, a vet tranquillised the six lions in the pride so police and staff could go inside and recover the remains of the poachers.

Sadly, rhino horn is apparently under increasing demand in Asia for its supposed qualities as an aphrodisiac.

Fox has said that the reserve remains open notwithstanding the events earlier this week, AFP reported. It is a growing problem: Over 7,000 rhinoceros have been killed in the last decade, after reaching a low of just 13 poached in 2007.

According to Nick Fox who is the manager of the game reserve in a post on his Facebook page, he claimed the poachers were intent on killing rhinos and removing their horns.

Nine rhinos were killed by illegal hunters in the Eastern Cape this year alone.
