  • Musk touts 'kid-sized submarine' to rescue stranded Thai footballers will be built 'in 8 hours'

Four of the 12 schoolboys were rescued from a flooded cave in northern Thailand on Sunday before the operation commenced a 10-hour pause to replenish oxygen supplies. The boys who were removed were considered the weakest, reports said.

"We have caves here in the Midwest that are equally risky, I would have to say, to the ones that are found in Thailand".

Once the first four boys made it out of the cave, people were unsure whether the government would use Musk's ideas to get them out.

"If we wait and the rain comes in the next few days we will be exhausted again from pumping and our readiness would drop".

Somboon Sompiangjai, 38, the father of one of the trapped boys, said parents were told by rescuers ahead of Sunday's operation the "strongest children" would be brought out first.

The boys urged relatives "not to worry" and asked for their favourite food once they were safely evacuated, in notes handed to divers.

The president of soccer's governing body, FIFA, has invited the boys to the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday if they make it out in time.

The rescue mission has faced a flawless storm of obstacles since it began, including monsoonal rains, a lack of oxygen in the cave and the fact that numerous boys trapped inside don't know how to swim let alone dive.

Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn said at a press conference on Monday that the effort would involve the same divers. Sunday's mission took nine hours and plenty of energy, with each child being accompanied by two divers along the way. Many people posted their reactions to the high-tech rescue operation under the hashtag #ThaiCaveRescue.

The rescue of the first six was a stunning victory in an operation Narongsak had earlier dubbed "Mission Impossible", and led to cautious optimism that the others would also be saved.

Five of the 12 Thai boys who have been trapped in a flooded cave in Northern Thailand have been rescued. "At 10 a.m. today (11 p.m. ET) 13 foreign divers went in to extract the children along with five Thai navy SEALs".

Although it rained on Sunday, it did not affect the water levels in the cave, said Narongsak Osatanakorn, the leader of the command center in charge of the rescue operation.

The other, and perhaps more worrying, was that oxygen levels in the complex were falling close to risky levels. Efforts to pump water out of the cave have been set back by heavy downpours.

In the week since the team was found alive, expert climbers, divers and Thai Navy Seals have mulled contingencies ranging from drilling an escape route through the mountain to waiting out the monsoon season and spending months inside the cave.

The boys and their coach, whose team is known as the Wild Boars, became stranded when they were exploring the cave after a practice game on June 23. Monsoon flooding blocked off their escape and prevented rescuers from finding them for nearly 10 days.

Their ordeal has drawn huge media attention in Thailand and overseas, and getting the boys out safely could be a boost for Thailand's ruling junta ahead of a general election next year.

The soccer team seen in the cave last week, before anyone was rescued. "Extremely robust", Musk tweeted, adding that it would take eight hours to construct and 17 hours to transport to Thailand.
