  • Papa John's founder apologizes for using N-word

Papa John's Pizza's founder John Schnatter may have resigned as chairman of the restaurant chain's board of directors following news that he used a racial slur in a conference call, but he still owns a substantial stake in the company. According to Forbes, Schnatter tried to downplay his past controversies by saying that Colonel Sanders - the founder of KFC - called black people the N-word.

He reportedly made additional comments about his life in IN, where, he claimed people used to drag Black folks from trucks until they died.

Though he apparently wanted to convey his disapproval to racism, several individuals on the call found it to be offensive.

"Regardless of the context, I apologize", the statement says.

The University of Louisville said it doesn't condone racism. but added it doesn't think Schnatter's comments "reflect his personal beliefs or values".

"Papa John's will appoint a new Chairman of the Board in coming weeks", the company said.

Hours later, the pizza company he founded in the 1980s announced in a brief statement that Schnatter had quit the board.

Okay, so on one hand, it's good Schnatter is admitting his fault in using the slur.

Papa John's opened its first location in Canada in Alberta in 2000 and now has 127 Canadian franchise locations, according to the trade publication Canadian Business Franchise.

An article published Wednesday in Forbes detailed the latest incident from May involving a conference call between Papa John's executives and the marketing agency Laundry Service.

The NFL anthem comments did reportedly gain support from the US's far-right, however, inspiring American neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer to proclaim Papa John's the official pizza of the so-called "alt-right"- a political movement which has been accused of racism and anti-Semitism.

Papa John himself has also been forced to resign from at least one board he'd now been on, too; according to TMZ, Schnatter is stepping down from his post on the University of Louisville's Board of Trustees, effective immediately.

Forbes reports that Papa John's shares have declined by 25 percent since Schnatter made his initial remarks positioning his company's profits above the spirit of the National Football League protests, which are, for many black people in this country, a matter of life-or-death.
