New role for Daventry MP after resignations from Brexit department

The resignation comes less than a day after Brexit Secretary David Davis and his junior minister Steve Baker stepped down.

Earlier staunch Brexiteer Dominic Raab was named as Mr Davis's replacement as Secretary of State for Leaving the EU. David Davis and Steve Baker clearly realised that the promises they and their colleagues made about Brexit simply can not be delivered. He put the chances of a confidence vote at 75 percent and her likelihood of winning one at 60 percent.

"I wouldn't personalise it, but what struck me when I met him he kept telling us it'll be alright, when I referenced the revenue report and how catastrophic a hard Brexit would be, he simply said that we must make sure that never happens, but gave no details".

In his resignation letter, Johnson said: "On Friday, I acknowledged that my side of the argument were too few to prevail, and congratulated you on at least reaching a cabinet decision on the way forward".

However, as a devout Catholic, Rees-Mogg has made no secret of his highly conservative social views, including his stance against abortion and gay marriage, which may alienate some voters.

If Mrs May chose to fight, she would need the support of more than 50% of Conservative MPs - now 159 - in the confidence vote to stay in office.

The Prime Minister would have been forgiven for thinking on Sunday evening that she had managed to placate unhappy Cabinet Brexiteers at Chequers on Friday.

Johnson, who wrote in his resignation letter that the Brexit "dream is dying" and that Britain was headed for the "status of colony" under May's leadership, is seen as a potential challenger. He said Britain was heading for a "semi-Brexit".

May announced on Friday that her warring Cabinet had finally agreed to a plan to follow European Union rules for trade in goods, raising hopes that long-stalled talks with the bloc could progress.

"We want to get a Brexit that works for everybody and none more so than the communities along the border", he added.

An agreement was announced after the 12-hour meeting, but many Brexiteers have been unhappy with the deal which they think will lead to the "worst of both worlds".

Davis said he could not support May's plan to maintain close trade and regulatory ties with the European Union, which he said gave "too much away, too easily".

He told BBC Radio 4's Today: "It seems to me we are giving too much away too easily and that's a unsafe strategy at this time".

In a scathing resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Johnson said that, under her leadership, the United Kingdom was "heading for a semi-Brexit", with the dream of an outward-looking global Britain "dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt".

"Theresa May has lost seven cabinet ministers since November", he said.

Although it has caused a headache, May was quick to capitalize on the fact that two of her biggest problems extricated themselves from her inner circle; she ceremoniously replaced Davis and Johnson with more amiable substitutes.

There were calls for May to scrap her proposals and tell the European Union that the leaving without a deal, according to one person who was present. "The EU is massively responsible". Baker was replaced by Chris Heaton-Harris, another Brexiter, who sparked controversy past year after asking universities to supply details of their teaching on the EU.

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson said: "Theresa May's Government is in meltdown".

More crucially, Mr Johnson is wrong to say that the laws in question were "supported at every level of UK Government".

The dramatic departure of the two senior cabinet ministers has sparked rumours that May could face an imminent leadership challenge.

What has been the reaction from the EU?

"Now there is chaos", it said in its editorial.

The next Brexit negotiating round is pencilled in for a week today.

If she chose to fight, she would need the support of more than 50% of Conservative MPs - now 159 - in the confidence vote to stay in office. The UK government is in turmoil, but that has been the case for more than two years.
