May says Trump told her to 'sue the EU'

16 Июля, 2018, 12:03 | Author: Kelly Blake

After intensive talks at Chequers, an emollient U.S. president showered praise on the "incredible" Prime Minister and said she was "doing a fantastic job".

She will seek to drive home the message today at Farnborough Air Show.

But Brexiteers criticised the proposal and warned it would "extend the uncertainty" over Britain's divorce from Brussels.

Johnson returned to the political fray with his first column for Monday's Daily Telegraph since he resigned from the government over the Chequers compromise.

According to Politico, the key question is whether May's Tory opponents will try to keep pressure on May or whether they have the numbers and the intention to damage her government in an effort to get the Brexit they feel voters expect.

May told the BBC on Sunday that is what Trump referred to in a Friday press conference when he said he had made a suggestion that May found "too brutal".

In a BBC television interview on Sunday, Mrs May said she understood the strength of feelings driving the Brexit debate.

"It can not be the breaking up of our precious United Kingdom with a border down the Irish Sea".

The president said Mrs May "can't walk away" from exit talks with the European Union, though suggested she could use other methods to secure a good deal.

The US president later said he hoped for a great trade deal with Britain after Brexit.

He alleged a white paper drawn up by former Brexit Secretary Mr Davis's department had been in vain.

'This is, at best, an untrusting way to behave and a more severe commentator would call it untrustworthy, ' he wrote.

He accused Mrs May of concealing a desire for no real Brexit, saying "perhaps we ought to have realised earlier on that a Remainer would stick with Remain".

While May is not expected to be defeated on the amendments, a high number of votes in favour of altering the customs bill by members of her party would further undermine her negotiating strategy, agreed at a cabinet meeting at her Chequers country residence this month.

Theresa May hits back at her critics in her letter.

"An establishment elite who never accepted the fundamental right of the public to choose democratically their institutions are working towards overturning them", he complained.

He said: "If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the United Kingdom, so it will probably kill the deal".

"In terms of who ultimately holds the pen on the papers that go to Cabinet for collective decision, it has been the Cabinet Office's Europe Unit, and they have clearly been operating to a different ultimate goal to the one what we were operating to".

Mr Davis meanwhile branded claims that there was no alternative to the Chequers plan as "astonishingly dishonest".

"This jeopardises the opportunities offered by Brexit", Davis wrote in the Financial Times on Sunday.

He added: "None of this amounts to taking back control. some are saying that those on the other side of the argument have not worked out an alternative".
