He had not cut the fingernails on his left hand since 1952. The 82-year-old, from Pune, India, managed to grow his left hand nails to a collective length of about 29 feet, 10 inches over the course of 66 years. Or rather, a technician wearing a face mask and wielding a power tool carefully removed them during a "nail clipping ceremony" in NY.

Warning: this video shows graphic footage of a man getting his fingernails cut after growing them for 66 years.

This is the moment that he finally said goodbye to his record-breaking nails.

Mr Chillal was officially recognised in 2014 by the Guinness World Records as the person with the longest fingernails ever on a single hand. Chillal has said that his nails were so fragile that he has to be very careful not to break them while sleeping: "I can't move much, so every half an hour or so I wake up and move my hand to the other side of the bed".

While Chillal holds the world record for longest fingernails on one hand, the current record for longest nails on both hands goes to Ayanna Williams of Houston, Texas, reported HuffPost. But why did Shridhar grow them so long in the first place? They together stretched about 30 feet, or the length of a bus, before he finally had them cut on Wednesday. "When I chose to cut my nails, it was hard for me to make this decision, but when I realised that after cutting my nails, my nails will be at Ripley's Believe It or Not! and they're going to maintain it very nicely and for a lifetime, then I felt like I was doing the right decision and that's why I chose to cut my nails". Due to the nails' weight over six decades, however, Chillal's left hand is permanently disfigured, leaving him unable to open his hand or flex his fingers.

His nails will be on display for all to see at Ripley's Believe It or Not! in Times Square.
