Jonathan Crenshaw stabbed a 22-year-old Chicago man twice with the scissors before running away, according to Miami Beach police.

An armless homeless man who is known on South Beach as an artist who paints with his feet was arrested Tuesday for stabbing a man with a pair of scissors, authorities said.

Neither men dispute that Coronado was stabbed, but Crenshaw said he was attacked first, according to the arrest report.

He's often found along Lincoln Road, creating colorful art with his feet while passersby marvel at his ability.

Crenshaw has been charged with one count of felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

On Monday night, his usual hangout turned violent.

He told officers he was lying on the ground when the victim came up to him and punched him in the head. He and a female friend who was present said Coronado asked Crenshaw for directions and was attacked, police said. Paramedics took him to an area hospital for treatment.

Crenshaw has an extensive criminal past, including battery of law enforcement officers, according to the Miami Beach Police Department.

Mr Crenshaw told police he acted in self defense.
