The Illinois Police officer who did not step in when a woman at a park was being harassed by a man because she was wearing a Puerto Rico shirt, resigned on Wednesday.
In the incident caught on video at a northwestern Chicago park last month, the woman pleads for help as a man harasses her, saying her shirt is un-American.
The officer, Patrick Connor, a 12-year veteran of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Police Department, had been put under investigation and on desk duty after a widely shared video of the confrontation angered public officials, including Gov. Ricardo A. Rosselló of Puerto Rico. "We are further addressing aspects of this incident", a spokesperson for the Forest Preserves of Cook County said in a statement, adding the superintendent would address the matter to the media on Thursday.
The Forest Preserves of Cook County had previously said the officer had been placed on desk duty as it investigated the incident.
A woman who was visiting Caldwell Woods on June 14 complained that a man approached her and questioned her citizenship, telling her she shouldn't be wearing the Puerto Rico shirt, even though the Caribbean island is a US commonwealth and its residents are considered American citizens. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said Timothy Trybus, 62, has been charged with two counts of felony hate crime. He gets closer to her and asks "Are you a citizen?"
"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America. Ok".
Connor, the officer, took a passive approach despite the fact that Irizarry asked him politely, and several times, to try to defuse the situation.
"Officer, I'm renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt I'm wearing, ' Irizzary then tells the cop, who had already been called to the scene to investigate Trybus" intoxicated behavior.
But the officer walks away. "We might start with the fine example presented by Mia Irizarry and her family, who handled this ugly incident with great composure, never stooping to the level of the man who attacked her".
My wife and I wanted to let her know that we support her and we admire her.
Irizarry recorded the encounter on her phone, saying she felt threatened, and posted the video to Facebook. "You should be wearing United States of America flag", he said.
Video of the incident shows the officer nearby but not responding.
