Apple releasediOS 11.4.1, tvOS 11.4.1, and watchOS 4.3.2 today with minor bug fixes for its iPhones, iPads, HomePods, Apple TVs, and Apple Watches, but there was one surprise in the software: USB Restricted Mode, a feature created to block iPhone-cracking USB devices used by law enforcement agencies, has finally arrived. iPhone users running iOS 11.4 right now have been complaining in droves that battery life has suffered after the update.
Dozens of user reports on the Apple support community claim that their iPhones are suffering from expedited battery drain on iOS 11.4. Significant but not listed: USB Restricted Mode, a change originally included in the iOS 12 beta that makes it more hard for anyone, including authorities, to break into the iPhone through the Lightning port.
The Restricted Mode for the USB data connection that runs over the Lightning plug on iPhones and iPads is part of the iOS 11.4.1 update released by Apple a few hours ago. If you go to Settings and check under Face ID & Passcode, you'll see a new toggle for USB Accessories. It's off by default.
At first we thought we would have to wait until iOS 12 this fall to see this feature, but here it is.
"In other words, once the police officer seizes an iPhone, he or she would need to immediately connect that iPhone to a compatible USB accessory to prevent USB Restricted Mode lock after one hour".
In addition to releasing iOS 11.4.1, Apple is also pushing out watchOS 4.3.2 for the Apple Watch and tvOS 11.4.1 for the Apple TV. No release notes were provided for tvOS 11.4.1, but it likely includes small performance improvements and bug fixes. The official change-log from Apple points to the release including "general improvements for stability and quality". Sometimes the company shifts its focus to the next major release (in this case, iOS 12) in the summer.
