After pulling out of the Isle of Man TT in June to be with his partner Janine following concerns over the couple's unborn baby, William made his ill-fated return at Skerries.

In a statement, competition oragnisers Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters Club confirmed Dunlop had passed away from the injuries he recived in the tragic accident.

"The Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters Club extends their heartfelt sympathy to William Dunlop's family and friends", they said. William's brother, Joey, is also scheduled to participate in the Skerries 100 this weekend, and both brothers were also competing at the North West 200 in 2008 when father Robert suffered a fatal accident during practice.

"We can not even begin to imagine what the family is going through, our thoughts and prayers are of course with them all and all our team members and sponsors at this sad time". William's younger brother Joey Dunlop is third on the all-time winners list at the Isle of Man, behind 23-time victor John McGuinness and the legendary Joey Dunlop.

Meanwhile William's uncle Joey - an icon of the sport who won a record 26 races at the Isle of Man TT meeting - died in 2000 aged 48 during a race in Tallinn, Estonia.
