Hamilton stages dramatic comeback but Vettel wins

  • Lewis Hamilton Mercedes AMG F1 celebrates his pole position

Three-time F1 drivers' championship victor and Mercedes' non-executive director Niki Lauda was far from pleased with what he saw from the collision, and wants answers from the Italian constructors.

"I think probably all of us are a little bit similar...we all could walk away from what we do today", said the team principal, whose driver has won the last four races at Silverstone. Hamilton and Mercedes have since accepted it was a racing incident. "This is something we can change".

Formula One champions Mercedes rallied around chief strategist James Vowles on Tuesday and dismissed reports he had been forced to apologise publicly for a mistake in last Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix.

The Silver Arrows boss also points to the team's messages to their drivers at Silverstone as proof that there isn't always an obviously better choice to make when faced with different strategic options. I only saw it briefly, and I don't think there was any intention.

"I don´t know what makes him (Hamilton) tick...but it seems a fairly freaky thing for somebody to feel they need to throw themselves under the bus to motivate a driver to go from fourth back into the lead". This time it was the right call to favour track position. So fine with that. I pushed absolutely 100, 1000%.

"It's not easy to overtake in a Formula 1 auto and they're trying to make those moves stick on lap one".

The first safety vehicle restart saw Bottas go early and create a good gap to Vettel behind, though racing quickly came to a halt as Romain Grosjean and Carlos Sainz Jr. collided and caused another safety auto period.

It was Ferrari's first win in Britain since 2011.

"So I think, balance-wise, we are not far off, but we are losing a lot of lap time on the straights".

"We want to be aggressive". It was not a certainty but he showed incredible pace, even when putting moves on other drivers. "This is what is in our hands and try to improve where we can improve".

"Exceptional individuals, you just have to accept that they have opinions - strong opinions and views and strong drive", he said. I gave everything I could, I was struggling to stand. "It's easy for you to sit there", Hamilton groused. It is just a constant learning of the tyre which is the single most important denominator of performance. "Who's he to judge what a driver is doing in the vehicle, I can accept it from Jacques [Villeneuve, Sky Italia pundit] because he's been a driver, but that person? No".

I was giving it everything I could in the re-starts, I had to push like in qualifying, but with about five laps to go, the tyres just could not take it any more.

"It is annoying and frustrating, but thankfully we've still got Daniel out there running". We win and lose together.
