European Union officials on Wednesday also ordered Google to stop using its popular Android mobile operating system to block its rivals, adding to trade tensions between Washington and Brussels.

The EC also called out Google for making payments to certain OEMs and mobile operators on the condition that they exclusively pre-installed the Google Search app on their devices and for and barring OEMs from using forked versions of the Android OS.

What the memo hints at, basically, is that Google might have to start charging companies for Android licences, should the European Commision's (EC) demands are granted.

It nearly doubles the €2.42b - about United States dollars $2.8b - that the European Union levied against the company previous year over promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of its search results.

The European Commission on Wednesday imposed a €4.34 billion ($5.06 billion) fine on Google for breaching the EU's antitrust rules through Android.

It it fails to overturn it, the company will have 90 days to change its practices or risk facing an even larger fine.

Phone makers that refused were reportedly blocked access to Google's Play app store.

Mr Pichai added the decision from the European Union had the chance to "upset the careful balance" Google has "struck with Android".

The EU wants Google to stop preloading its Chrome browser and its search engine to Android.

Google said it would appeal the decision. In the post, Google took a firm stand for itself and said that Android has helped 1,300 different smartphone manufacturers to develop Android-based mobiles. There are more than two billion Android devices - including phones, tablets, and watches - being used around the world every month.

The Commission opened its investigation into Android following a 2013 complaint from lobbying group FairSearch, which was backed by competitors including Oracle, Nokia and Microsoft.

Margrethe Vestager, the Competition Commissioner for the European Union, stated the huge fine would force Google to change its ways, increasing the chances of competition search apps and browsers to be downloaded.

A year ago eMarketer forecast almost $50billion would be made by Google in 2017 from mobile ad revenue.
