Upon exiting the store, she climbed in a black Nissan - the vehicle was open and the key's were in the ignition - and drove home.

Both vehicles require a key fob so the woman only had to push start.

According to Cornwall police, after renting the vehicle, the woman drove to a local Walmart where she did some grocery shopping.

The woman, a local herself, wasn't a repentant auto thief, but merely confused and possibly in a rush on the day she rented a vehicle - a black Nissan Sentra - and drove straight to Walmart to do a little shopping.

Both vehicles used a keyless entry remote, similar to this one.

In Cornwall, Ont., the where-the-hell-did-I-park scenario took on a odd and novel twist recently, after a black Nissan Infiniti, that was reported missing from a Walmart parking lot in late June, was found when a woman tried to return it to a local auto rental company. Since the rental vehicle used the same system she was none the wiser to the mixup and drove off on her merry way. Police stressed: "Never leave a key fob in a vehicle unless it's being driven". After all, she had no inkling she'd stolen the vehicle she was driving.

In the end - It was the manager at the Enterprise who was able to crack the case.

It took the manager of the branch driving her to the Walmart parking lot where her rental sat for her to see the accidental thief.

"We investigate stolen vehicles but this is definitely a unique situation for us", said Stephanie MacRae, communications coordinator with Cornwall Police.

Two weeks later, when the woman tried to return that very same vehicle, the manager clued in. Police say she caused confusion when she tried to drop of an Infiniti - not the Nissan she originally rented. There were papers in the glove box and cigarette butts in the ashtray, and even a set of golf clubs in the trunk.

There were no official charges so this story has a happy ending. After they realized what had happened, the first thing they did was call the police.

None of this tipped her off, until the manager drove with her over to the Walmart parking lot where the Nissan she had rented was still parked. Constable Tommy MacKay who dealt with the incident said the man who owned the stolen Infiniti had a good laugh about it and the woman who stole it was embarrassed.
