Ex-GOP lawmaker: Strzok hearing 'was a humiliating day' for Republicans

14 Julio, 2018, 08:07 | Author: Kelly Blake

The hearing brought a defiant Strzok face-to-face with Republican lawmakers who for months have held up his texts as the embodiment of anti-Trump bias within the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Page worked on the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation, and her anti-Trump text messages with Peter Strzok fueled several investigations into whether the DOJ and FBI showed bias during the Russian Federation probe and the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server.

"These were his words, [when] he sat in front of us for eight hours, nine hours and denied there was any bias".

"The reality is if that was a widespread attitude at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, we would be abolishing the Federal Bureau of Investigation", said Issa.

Strzok said "based on that frightful, disgusting behavior", he assumed Trump would not win the election.

Strzok insisted under aggressive questioning that a much-discussed August 2016 text in which he said "we'll stop" a Trump presidency followed Trump's denigration of the family of a dead USA service member.

And in a sign that Republicans are not eager to replay the nasty Strzok hearing, GOP lawmakers signaled Friday that they were unwilling to force Page to testify publicly - despite earlier indications that they would. Strzok was pulled off the Mueller investigation a year ago after the Justice Department's internal watchdog made the special prosecutor aware of the texts. Democrats responded with a call to bring back before the committee former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who was not forced to answer certain questions.

In an exchange with Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC, chair of the House Oversight Committee, Strzok defended his "we'll stop" Trump text. "It was the existence of your bias that got you kicked off", Gowdy said.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Friday indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers for engaging in "large-scale cyber operations to interfere with the 2016 USA presidential election".

"I don't give a damn what you appreciate, Agent Strzok", Mr. Gowdy said.

Trump himself has launched personal attacks against the two Federal Bureau of Investigation officials, including a Wednesday evening tweet that asked "how can the Rigged Witch Hunt proceed when it was started, influenced and worked on, for an extended period of time" by Strzok. In it, Strzok describes his reluctance to work on behalf of the special counsel, and that seemed to imply he didn't think there would be substantial findings of collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign team. He said it was not a declaration that he or the Federal Bureau of Investigation would improperly interfere with the electoral process.

Just hours after Strzok's outrageous hearing, Lisa Page was questioned behind closed doors.

"He [Strzok] was told by the intelligence community inspector general's investigator Frank Rutger that they had found an anomaly in the emails going to and from Hillary Clinton's unauthorized private server", Gohmert explained.

Republicans, on the other hand, peppered Strzok with questions and expressed outrage that's been building for months.
