  • Police officer given all-clear at Salisbury Hospital after fears of nerve agent exposure

Police said tests showed the pair were exposed to Novichok, the same type of nerve agent used to poison the Skripals.

The police have launched an investigation after Dawn Sturgess, 44, died on Sunday evening at Salisbury District Hospital, Scotland Yard said.

"This awful news has only served to strengthen our resolve to identify and bring to justice the person or persons responsible for what I can only describe as an outrageous, reckless and barbaric act", he added.

Britain blamed Russian Federation for the poisoning - a charge strongly denied by Moscow which has challenged British authorities to show the evidence.

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian Federation was sorry to learn of the death of Sturgess, but that any suggestion that Moscow was involved in the death is "quite absurd". Dawn Sturgess is understood to have links to John Baker House, which CNN saw residents leaving under instruction from police.

Mr Javid said there were "no plans" for further sanctions against Russian Federation, but he repeated the government's assessment that Russian Federation was the source of the Novichok.

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the head of UK Counter Terrorism policing, said 100 detectives are working as quickly as possible to identify the source of the recent contamination.

The nominally retired double agent Sergei Skripal spent several weeks in a coma after being discovered on a bench in Salisbury in March; he eventually recovered enough to be released from the hospital.

Ms Sturgess and Mr Rowley often foraged through bins and it is believed their lifestyle brought them into contact with the novichok.

Counter-terror police have said their main line of inquiry is whether the two cases are linked, but Mr Williamson went a step further by pointing the finger at Moscow. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

He said people in Salisbury should not pick up odd items such as needles, syringes or unusual containers.

Mr Javid said after visiting Wiltshire towns on Sunday: "This desperately sad news only strengthens our resolve to find out exactly what has happened".

Hospital officials said late Saturday that a number of people including a police officer had sought medical advice in the last week but had been found not to need any treatment.

A red Ford Transit van in which Mr Rowley was a passenger on June 30 has been recovered and sent for testing at the Government laboratory at Porton Down.

Dawn Sturgess, 44, succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in Salisbury, according to the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom.

The police officer added: "The investigation must be led by the evidence available and the facts alone". There were only two options, she argued: either the Russians had conducted the attempted assassination, or the nerve agent had fallen into the hands of a third party.
