Did May share her Brexit plan with Merkel before showing her cabinet?

Boris Johnson's decision to quit at the start of the week, along with Brexit minister David Davis and other officials, threatened to destabilise May's government and her plans for a business-friendly Brexit, agreed with top ministers last week. Brexit meant Brexit, but now it appears Brexit means remaining subject to European laws.

Boris Johnson's departure hasn't fundamentally weakened Theresa May, and it might well have strengthened her position with the moderates.

They are planning a show of strength in the Commons next week in votes on the Prime Minister's flagship Trade Bill. He went on further still, remarkably claiming that the UK's inability to influence laws as they are made means "we are truly headed for the status of colony".

Winning the backing of the DUP for one of the amendments is particularly significant because the Northern Irish unionist party had promised to support May's government in confidence votes and Brexit policy, after the Conservatives lost their overall majority in the 2017 election.

In case there was any doubt on the matter, he added: "I like Boris Johnson, I've always liked him".

While insisting that the option cannot be ruled out, Mr Gauke told Today: "What I would say to those of my colleagues, if there are some, who think this is pain-free and this is just something that we can ride over very easily, is no deal will have a negative impact on our constituents, on the British public".

In comments likely to alarm Mrs May, Trump acknowledged the "turmoil" facing her government but said he was nevertheless looking forward to "an interesting time" when he visits the United Kingdom later this week.

"Dreaming is good, probably for all of us, but we have to deal with the real world", he said.

That is more than the 48 required to trigger a no-confidence vote in May, if unhappy MPs were to lodge a formal objection with the chair of the party's backbench 1922 committee.

"Nor do we expect a leadership challenge".

The foreign and Brexit secretaries have both quit over the plans.

A week ago Britain had strict red lines on Brexit, pro-EU lawmakers were "traitors" and the plan for Britain's future ties with the European Union after leaving the bloc were a jumble of platitudes and overweening ambition.

Her plans, which also argue for Britain to set its own trade tariffs and open up services markets, are an attempt to meet the demands of businesses, pro-EU voters, Brexit supporters and the European Union, which has warned repeatedly that time is running out.

Stewart Jackson, former special adviser to Mr Davis, said No 10 had blocked his reappointment in the role under new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab.

"We deliver that Brexit and we do it in a way that protects jobs and livelihoods and meets our commitment to Northern Ireland".
