Lewis Hamilton's dream run at Silverstone was well and truly destroyed by Kimi Raikkonen yesterday when he caused a collision with the British driver.

It appeared Hamilton's Mercedes was permanently beached, then, first with all the alacrity of a Walrus dragging its tonnage across the sand, then like a thief running from the police he returned to the race. He was 0.093 seconds faster than Ferrari's Raikkonen and 0.642 better than Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas. It was one of his special laps.

The Sauber driver emerged unscathed, but the safety auto was sent out.

Instead, the Mercedes driver slipped eight points behind Sebastian Vettel, with the real possibility that his German rival will be leading into the August break. On cue, Marcus Ericsson lost it through Abbey on lap 33. Mercedes did not bring him in for fresh rubber, unlike Vettel and Raikkonen. It was one stop or nothing for them.

Arrivabene says he was anxious about Vettel's pain, but then praised the German's commitment. "Don't give up." He still wasn't convinced, once again questioning the value of his tyres.

She later removed the entry and, when addressing a fan who defended Hamilton, she added: "Just to be clear, I was not talking about the driver but the team who was crying afterwards that someone did something on goal".

"The others pitted under the Safety Car, but we took the risk and stayed out to get ahead of Sebastian".

The world champion, who trails Vettel by a point in the drivers' championship, increased his record total of career poles to 76 with a dazzling record lap under pressure in the closing seconds. The safety auto went in, the safety vehicle came out. "I'm great to have been able to get back to second and minimise the loss", Hamilton said.

Bottas, on old tyres, was starting to wane, and with five laps to go Vettel perfectly executed his move at Brooklands to take the lead.

Hamilton recovered to second, aided by Mercedes decision not to pit him for fresh tyres under a safety vehicle to gain track position, but looked tense alongside Raikkonen while the top three waited to go onto the podium post-race. Just after that re-start Romain Grosjean and Carlos Sainz came together, sending both cars into the wall and brought out another safety auto.

But while the Englishman could not give the home crowd a result to follow the national football team's success in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, he praised their support and said it would continue to spur him on throughout the rest of the season. Hamilton second with 163 points.

"So I think, balance-wise, we are not far off, but we are losing a lot of lap time on the straights".
