ANP leader Haroon Bilour among 20 martyred in Peshawar blast

The attack targeted a campaign event organised in the city of Peshawar by the Awami National Party, which has been targeted by Islamist militants in the past over its vocal opposition to extremist groups like the Taliban.
Barrister Haroon Bilour was son on Bashir Ahmed Bilour, who was also martyred in suicide attack in Qissa Khawani Bazaar in December 2012, and nephew of another ANP stalwart Ghulam Ahmed Bilour. Bilour suffered serious injuries and was shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
A suicide bomber detonated his explosives soon after Haroon Bilour arrived in Yaka Toot area to address a corner meeting of his party.
Rescue teams and law enforcement agencies have reached the site of the blast and investigations into the incident are now underway. Bilour was contesting the election from PK-78 Peshawar.
Bilour belonged to an influential political family in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, of which Peshawar is the capital.
The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) confirmed that it was a suicide blast.
This is the second terrorist attack on an election rally in Pakistan ahead of the July 25 general election.
They have often been claimed by the Pakistani Taliban and their allies.
Last month, a United States drone strike killed the Pakistani Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah, who had claimed responsibility for most of the attacks against the ANP in the 2013 election on the grounds that it had supported operations against the militants. The TTP spokesperson at the time, Ehsanullah Ehsan, had told journalists that Haroon was the target, but "unfortunately Ghulam Ahmed Bilour got injured".
More than 380,000 personnel will be deployed for the elections, according to Major General Asif Ghafoor, the military spokesman.
