  • Alphabet brings balloon internet to Kenya

Telkom CEO Aldo Mareuse added,"We will work very hard with Loon, to deliver the first commercial mobile service, as quickly as possible, using Loon's balloon-powered internet in Africa".

Kenyans in rural and sparsely populated areas will from next year access high-speed internet through high altitude balloons which act as cell towers.

This being 2018, the balloons exclusively offer 4G LTE access, although Loon is looking at adding 5G support in the future.

Alastair Westgarth, Chief Executive of Loon told Reuters that, "Loon's mission is to connect people everywhere by inventing and integrating audacious technologies". "At the end of the day, Loon is providing an infrastructure solution - it just happens to be 60,000 feet in the air, on the edge of space".

The announcement comes just a week after Loon graduated from Alphabet's secretive "moonshot factory" known as X. That means it's considered a full-fledged company beside sibling companies including Google and self-driving vehicle developer Waymo.

Since then, the company has taken a giant leap forward and partnered with Telkom Kenya to provide balloon-powered internet to regions of central Kenya.

However, some critics have suggested the partnership will lead to a monopoly in Kenya, dominating the internet market and warning those most affected will be the consumers.

Alphabet's Loon has partnered with Telkom Kenya for its first commercial agreement in Africa. Telkom Kenya and Loon will determine precise coverage areas in the coming months, though their decisions will require ratification by regulators. The project will provide internet signals across a massive area, using solar panels on board to generate power. Keep up the good work you Loons!
