Americans would face job losses and higher prices.

US President Donald Trump issued a volley of tweets on Monday venting anger on some of Washington's closest North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies over the United State's trade deficit, following a divisive G7 meeting in Canada.

So Trump's national security justification is so laughable that Republicans who have been willing to stick by Trump through every other blunder are ready to work with Democrats to block these tariffs by holding military spending hostage.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel described his change of heart as "sobering and a little depressing".

Trump's looming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un heightens tension, and White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of betraying Trump with "polarizing" statements on trade policy that risked making the US leader look weak on the eve of the historic North Korea summit.

In an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union," Kudlow argued that Trudeau's critique amounted to a betrayal of the G7, as well as the U.S. "I regard this as much like a family quarrel".

After Trump's angry tweets, Trudeau's office issued a brief response: "We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the G7 summit". Trump is unlikely to back away from the nationalistic policies that have frustrated and unnerved allies but which he sees as key promises to his most loyal voters.

Trump advisers also took up the attack in appearances on Sunday's news shows, leveling more withering and unprecedented criticism against Trudeau, branding him a back-stabber unworthy of Trump's time.

She left no doubt that European Union nations will impose counter-measures on United States goods in response, but cautioned against tit-for-tat retaliation which might lead to a trade war.

"Why should I, as President of the United States, allow countries to continue to make Massive Trade Surpluses, as they have for decades, while our Farmers, Workers & Taxpayers have such a big and unfair price to pay?"

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada", Trump said. "That's clearly what was the frustration, but no, I think that the Judgement Day that separates us from Heaven and Hell is not dependent on whether you agree with the President".

Threatening such a change could be another effort to advance the negotiations in order to secure a congressional vote on a revised deal by the end of the year, according to worldwide law firm Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg. "They have different problems", Kudlow is reported as saying.

On the other hand, it may be created to signal that Trump is in fact willing to end the quarter-century-old agreement, the firm says in its trade report published today (7 June). Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said his country would now "surely" look to Europe for pork products.

The increasingly critical tone from allies is a shift after leaders spent the past year and a half seeking to woo and cajole the American president.

On board Air Force One, an AFP reporter was told that Trump had approved the agreement, only to be told later of the tweets.
