  • President Trump right and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reach to shake hands at their summit in Singapore on June 12

President Donald Trump had said on June 12 after his summit with Kim Jong Un that the North Korean leader was "already destroying" a missile site, in addition to committing to "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula. And this declaration specifically cites North Korea's nuclear weapons as the reason for the emergency and as a direct threat to United States national security.

National emergencies regarding North Korea were previously declared by the Bush and Obama administrations.

"Yes. I think that I've had a very good relationship, we have a good chemistry together.and I really believe he's.looking to do the right thing", Trump said.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon said on Friday evening that it has "indefinitely suspended" a major military exercise with South Korea, known as Freedom Guard and scheduled for August, as well as two Korean Marine exchange training exercises.

Between 1996 and 2005, joint US-North Korea military search teams conducted 33 recovery operations that collected 229 sets of American remains.

President Trump has also promised to cease joint military exercises between US troops and South Korea, which the North has long regarded as a provocation.

"President Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most risky problem", he tweeted.

Though the notice is considered pro forma, the disparity in tone reflects the work that United States officials concede remains to be done as negotiators thrash out the details of Pyongyang's disarmament.

Also on June 23, the Pentagon announced the indefinite suspension of joint military exercises with South Korea, fulfilling a pledge made by Trump to Kim in Singapore.

North Korea has furiously objected to the exercises for many years, branding them provocative and a rehearsal for invasion.

Richard Downes, whose father went missing in the Korean War and is president of the Coalition of Families of Korean & Cold War POW/MIAs, was optimistic the Trump-Kim summit would lead to the return of more remains.

-South Korean exercises were a vital deterrent to North Korean threats. Some could be lifted as negotiations progress.

More than 36,000 USA troops died in the three-year war, which ended in an armistice instead of a peace treaty.

Officials had announced on Monday that planning for Freedom Guard had been suspended in line with Trump's decision to halt what he called United States "war games" in South Korea.

After meeting Mr Kim in Singapore, Mr Trump told reporters: "Under the circumstances, that we're negotiating".

Japan plans to suspend the civilian evacuation drills it started previous year when North Korea was repeatedly test-firing missiles near and over Japanese islands, officials said yesterday, citing diplomatic overtures from Pyongyang.
