President Donald Trump has delivered a further blow to the U.S. relationship with traditional allies by retracting his endorsement for a joint communique with G7 leaders and threatening to escalate a brewing trade war.
Trump tweeted Saturday that he had instructed his representatives not to sign a communique between the seven nations that make up the group just after host Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced all countries had agreed to it.
Trump also took aim at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and said he might double down on import tariffs by hitting the sensitive automobile industry, throwing G7 efforts to show a united front into disarray.
Trudeau said he had told Trump that the talks had been made more complicated by a USA decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, ostensibly for national security reasons.
Trump tweeted after he left the Group of Seven summit in Quebec, Canada.
The G7 is made up of Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy.
"International cooperation can not depend on being angry and on sound bites". He said it for the journalists before leaving for the G7 Summit.
Trump tweeted on his way to Singapore where he is expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and appeared, at least on Twitter, optimistic about the outcome.
Trudeau said he told Trump in candid conversations that USA steel and aluminum tariffs imposed this month were "insulting" and that Canada will move forward with counter-tariffs.
Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, lashed out at Trudeau as "amateurish" and "sophomoric" for a news conference the prime minister gave after Trump left the G7 summit on Saturday.
Trudeau said he told Trump directly that Canada 'particularly did not take lightly the fact that [the tariffs were] based on a national security reason'.
'There will not be a sunset clause. we will not, can not sign a trade deal that expires automatically every five years, ' he told a news conference at the end of a Group of Seven summit in Quebec.
Mr Trump made the comments after the communique had already been officially released in response to a press conference held by Justin Trudeau to mark the close of the summit.
Trump had run for the presidency on a vow to shrink the gaping US trade deficit - $566 billion previous year.
"So we are either going to have NAFTA in a better negotiated form or we're going to have two deals".
President Trump said that he expects other nations to provide fair market access to American exports.
Trump infuriated his G7 allies recently by slapping them with the hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum - a move that prompted Canada and the European Union to threaten duties of their own.
On Saturday, Trump repeated his desire to have a sunset clause in an updated NAFTA deal, a demand Trudeau rejected again. "It is in everyone's interest", he said on Twitter according to an English translation.
"The world as we know it, namely the USA -led rules-based multilateralism, is now in serious danger of unraveling, as illustrated at the G7 meeting", said Erik Nielsen, chief economist at Unicredit Bank. "Both of those things could happen", Trump said, warning that it would be "very bad" for Canada and Mexico if no deal could be reached among the three countries.
