  • Canadian PM Justin Trudeau calls Donald Trump's security reasoning for tariffs 'laughable'

As the first of two days of meetings in La Malbaie, Quebec ended, the Group of Seven leaders limped toward something that could look like a win, even if it comes far short of the broad communique signed by all attendees that typically comes out of their summits.

Ms Merkel said it was not clear whether the group would issue a final directive, adding that failure to do so would be an honest reflection of the lack of agreement among Canada, the United States, Japan, Britain, Italy, France and Germany. At the time, he mentioned he was open to renegotiating the pact, but other members expressed resistance to that idea.

On Friday, he and Mr. Trump had a one-on-one meeting.

As tempers frayed, Trump had a ready retort, via tweet: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the USA massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers". "We are actually working on cutting tariffs and making it all very fair for both countries and made a lot of progress today".

Trump has taken several measures that have infuriated fellow G7 nations, such as abandoning the Iran nuclear deal and backing out of the Paris climate accord.

Earlier, he welcomed President Trump to the summit with a warm handshake.

"Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things", Trump said in a tweet on Thursday.

As night fell crowds gathered near the conference media centre, some of them burning G7 flags and assaulting journalists.

The leaders discussed trade in their afternoon group meeting, touching on the World Trade Organization, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the steel and aluminum tariffs that Trump recently imposed on Canada and the European Union, the Canadian official said.

Trade ministers and politicians from multiple countries have voiced opposition in the media to the tariffs ahead of the G-7 summit, and have indicated they may band together to push the USA president to reverse his decision.

But Kudlow was quick to downplay the rift between the president and United States allies.

France and other US allies have also bristled at Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

He called Canadian PM Justin Trudeau "indignant" and took aim at French President Macron as well.

At home, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer poured scorn on the Republican President's suggestion that Russian Federation should be readmitted to the G7.

This had been building to a G6-plus-one summit, with Mr. Trump facing concerted opposition on his administration's recent tariffs. Trump said before departing from the White House for the G-7 summit in Canada. "If it doesn't happen, we come out even better!" the president wrote on Twitter, hours before his arrival in Quebec.

Trump will leave the summit early to attend a summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday.

The president called for the G-7 to readmit Russian Federation, to the shock of the other foreign leaders, who, in concert with then-President Barack Obama had kicked the country out of the club as a rebuke to Moscow for illegally annexing Crimea. "We'll see how it all works out", he said, referring specifically to Canada.

On Wednesday, the European Union announced $3 billion worth of tariffs on US products in retaliation would go into effect next month.

Last month, Trump violated and withdrew from the Iranian nuclear agreement, going against the wishes of the rest of the P5+1 (China, France, Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom) countries who are all signatories to the deal.
