Net Neutrality Rules Died Today

  • Net Neutrality Ends Today, But The Fight To Protect Internet Speeds Rages On

The recent FCC's staunch opposition to net neutrality has been met with waves of public backlash, at one point amounting to almost 22 million comments being submitted to the its website, as well as criticism from policy experts who say a repeal of the rules will let internet service providers give preferential treatment to some websites, including their own.

In an op-ed for CNET on Monday, Pai wrote that the Obama-era rules requiring internet service providers to treat all web traffic equally were too onerous.

The rules oblige Internet service providers, or ISPs, to enable access of all content and applications, regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites.

In December 2017, the FCC voted to repeal those "open internet" rules, reclassifying the internet as an information service, which is subject to less regulation.

"We once again call on Congress to pass, this year, a law protecting the core principles of an open internet - no blocking, no throttling, no censorship, no unfair discrimination based on online content - and including robust consumer privacy protections that apply to all entities in the internet ecosystem and no matter how consumers access the internet". FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has little reason to celebrate as critics are closely monitoring ISPs and other internet companies to see if they pull any stunts and abuse the laws for corporate benefits.

Now that net neutrality is gone, AT&T can slow down your streaming on Hulu and speed it up for Netflix.

Some lawmakers, states and tech companies are still fighting to save the rule.

Twenty-nine states have since introduced legislation, proposing reinstating some aspects of Net Neutrality.

The repeal of net neutrality takes the regulation of the internet from the government's hands and places it into the hands of internet providers.

Net neutrality is officially a thing of the past - but not in Washington state.

The measure in the House seeks to reinstate the 2015 rules.

When fighting against the 2015 net neutrality rules, the ISPs said nearly in unison that they would prefer to leave net neutrality rules to Congress instead of the FCC. In California, SB 822 is scheduled for Assembly committee hearings this month after the state senate approved it at the end of May.

Pai also stressed that the FTC - the agency now in charge of policing whether telecoms abuse their power - is "going to be a powerful tool for weeding out any anti-competitive conduct".

Paid prioritization: Service providers could not create an internet fast lane for companies and consumers who paid premiums and a slow lane for those who didn't. "We were hopeful that that type of the light regulatory approach we're taking will lead to. better, faster, cheaper Internet access for consumers and more competition particularly".

A spokeswoman for the FCC previously directed CNNMoney to a section of the final order for net neutrality, in which the FCC asserts authority to prevent states from pursuing laws inconsistent with the net neutrality repeal. "They just don't want to own the fact that they want to change this", Miller said.
